The Thailand weed medical card explained

Last updated

Short answer: There is no card that lets you buy cannabis flower in Thailand. The document that does is a PT 33 prescription, issued by a Thai-licensed practitioner and valid for no more than 30 days. People call it a medical card, licence or certificate. Cards and prescriptions from other countries are not valid.

Key facts

  • Official document: Form PT 33 (Phor Thor 33, ภท.33).
  • Issued by: a licensed practitioner after an assessment.
  • Must show: the product, dosage and duration, plus the practitioner's licence number and signature.
  • Validity: no more than 30 days, one-time use.
  • Foreign medical cannabis cards and prescriptions: not valid.

What is the "Thailand weed card"?

Searchers use several words for the same thing, and some of them mean something different.

What people call itWhat it really isDoes it let you buy flower?
Medical card, weed cardUsually the PT 33 prescriptionOnly the PT 33 counts
Medical certificateA word some providers use for the PT 33 or for a doctor's letterOnly if it is the PT 33 form
Weed licenceLicences belong to shops and practitioners, not to customersNo

What does a PT 33 contain?

The prescriber indicates the product type or strain, the dosage and how long it should be used. The practitioner's licence number and signature must be present, and the outlet checks the buyer's personal details against it.

How long does a PT 33 last?

No more than 30 days. It is valid for one use and cannot be refilled, so each later purchase needs a new assessment and a new PT 33.

What a PT 33 does not allow

  • Smoking in public places. That can be treated as a public nuisance.
  • Taking cannabis out of Thailand.

How can you tell a genuine PT 33?

Check that it carries your name, the product and duration, the practitioner's licence number and a signature. A prescription should follow an assessment of you, not be signed in advance. If anything is missing, ask the outlet or the practitioner before you pay.

FAQ

Can I use my US, UK or German medical cannabis card in Thailand?

No. Foreign prescriptions have no validity in Thailand, and Terms.law says foreign cards have no legal effect.

Is a medical certificate the same as a PT 33?

Not necessarily. Ask to see the PT 33 form itself.

Do I need a card to enter Thailand with cannabis?

No, and you should not bring any. Bringing cannabis into Thailand is treated as trafficking, even from a country where it is prescribed.

Who issues the PT 33?

A licensed practitioner. You can reach one by video through a telemedicine service such as Botanic RX.
