Getting a cannabis prescription in Thailand with a passport

Last updated

Short answer: Yes. A foreigner can get a PT 33 prescription in Thailand with a passport: no Thai ID card is needed. You sign up with your passport number and nationality, verify your identity once with a photo of the passport, see a Thai-licensed doctor by video, and collect at the partner shop you chose, showing the same passport. Prescriptions and medical cards from your home country are not valid in Thailand.

Key facts

  • ID: your passport. No Thai ID card or Thai address is needed to sign up.
  • Age: 20 or older.
  • Language: the app and the consultation work in English, and passport holders get the English version of Form PT 33.
  • Validity: a PT 33 covers no more than 30 days and can be collected only at the branch named on it.
  • At pickup: show your original passport, the same one you signed up with.
  • Cost: a Botanic RX video consultation costs 150 baht.

Can foreigners get a cannabis prescription in Thailand?

Yes, through the same route as Thai patients. Since June 2025, cannabis flower can be bought only with a PT 33 prescription issued in Thailand by a licensed practitioner, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) says this applies to tourists too. The law does not reserve the PT 33 for Thai nationals. What you cannot use is a prescription or card from another country: Terms.law says foreign cards have no legal effect in Thailand.

How to sign up with a passport

  1. Open the sign-up form. Switch the app to English at the top of the page if it shows Thai.
  2. Enter your details as in your passport. First and last name, email, phone number and date of birth.
  3. Choose Passport as your ID document. Enter the passport number and pick your nationality from the list (type to find it, or choose "Other" and write it).
  4. Read and accept the terms and the privacy notice. Then press Register.
  5. Confirm your email. Open the email from Botanic RX within 24 hours, confirm, and set your password.

The details must match the passport you will show at the consultation and at pickup.

Verify your identity once

Before your first prescription, send a photo of your passport from your profile: the photo page, sharp and without glare. Our staff compare it with the details you signed up with. You do this once; after that your name, date of birth and passport number are locked, and the same verification is used for every consultation and pickup. If your passport changes, ask from your profile to change the document.

The consultation and your PT 33

Have your passport ready and find a quiet place with a good connection. A Thai-licensed doctor sees you by video, asks about your symptoms, medicines and history, and decides whether a prescription is appropriate; approval is not automatic. If the doctor prescribes, the PT 33 appears in the app with a QR code, usually within a few minutes. Passport holders get the official English version of the form, and the page the QR code opens shows its status in English too.

Collecting at a partner shop

Go to the branch you chose before the date on the prescription, with your original passport. The staff check the passport against your verified details and scan the QR code to confirm the prescription is genuine, still valid and for that branch. You sign for it on the shop's screen. A prescription cannot be collected at another branch or after it expires.

Rather register at a shop?

You can also walk into a Botanic RX partner shop. The staff photograph your passport, register you and call the doctor on duty for you. Giving an email is optional: if you do, we email you a link to set a password on the same account, and your PT 33 when it is issued.

What foreigners cannot do

  • Use a prescription or medical card from another country.
  • Smoke in public: it can be treated as a public nuisance.
  • Take cannabis out of Thailand, or bring it in: many countries treat it as a narcotic.
  • Give or sell what you collect to someone else: a PT 33 is for your own treatment.
